If you need some ideas and tips for keeping a cleaner home and maintaining cleaner carpets, then you'll probably want to take a look at the carpet cleaning advice below. Everyone wants to have clean carpets, yet for some reason, many don't take the effort to do so, despite it being a pretty easy to do so. Let's take a look at some simple habits to adopt and general ways to maintain cleaner carpets.

1. Remove your shoes before coming in the home. This is a rule that might take some time to get everyone to follow, but it's one of the best ways to keep your carpets cleaner. Simply put, the dirt won't have a chance to get into the carpet because the dirty bottoms of shoes won't be touching them! Don't worry about offending people - if someone doesn't want to follow this rule, it still benefits your carpets if 90% of everyone else does.

2. Put a rug by the door. Placing a rug by the door will cause people to automatically wipe their feet. Placing one rug on the outside of the door and one on the inside will do even more; some people might miss the first rug. Other times, if more than one person is coming in an once, the second person won't be tempted to pass by the rug without wiping their feet. This also will give the person from number one who refuses to take off their shoes a chance to partially make up for it by wiping them clean on the rug.

3. Keep a towel handy by the door. This is an especially important tip for any household that has pets. When bringing them back into the house, having a towel nearby to wipe their feet first will make things easier. It's also handy to have to wipe other items that may have dirt on them that are being brought into the house and will end up directly on the carpet.

These points addressed above are about keeping dirt from entering into the house in the first place. Preventive care is very important and requires no real work, just good habits. Now let's take a look at some ways of keeping the carpets clean in the long run.

4. Vacuum once or twice a week. You can even vacuum more if you like, but establishing a vacuuming routine for one or two days a week is a sufficient for most households. This will keep things clean in general and also help prevent dirt and other environmental allergens from bonding with the carpet over time.

5. Get the carpets professionally cleaned once a year. If you can't do it once a year, try to get it done every other year. This is especially important if you've not had it done before or if you're using carpets that have had other people live on them. Cleaning the carpets takes less than a day and most of the work can be done in just a few hours, with the rest of the time dedicated towards letting the carpets properly dry out. You'll have the option of doing it yourself by renting or buying the equipment, or simply paying a carpet cleaning service to come to your home and do it for you.

You can see that it's really not hard to keep the carpets clean year round, it just takes some good habits and cleaning schedule. Next time you walk into you home, start with an easy step, wipe your feet and then take your shoes off. Then next week, call the carpet cleaner and start fresh!
